When Craig Gardner left West Brom for Birmingham City on a permanent basis in the transfer window that has just passed, it was quite significant.

For Gardner was the final member of the group that Albion brought into the club in the summer of 2014, a rather fateful window on reflection with business overseen by Terry Burton, Richard Garlick and Alan Irvine.

Gardner was the first through the door, on a free following his release from Sunderland, and when Joleon Lescott arrived soon after, also on a free from champions Manchester City, it was also considered a decent acquisition.

None of the following signings made an impact, and many were cast out by Tony Pulis when he arrived after replacing the doomed Irvine.

Where are the class of 2014 now?

Craig Gardner - Perhaps the most successful of the group. Pulis was reluctant to let him go but Blues could offer first-team football.

Joleon Lescott - Player of the Year in his single season at the club. Left a, ah, lasting impression at Villa. Released by Sunderland in the summer.

Chris Baird - Versatile and experienced, Baird was a sensible addition on a free. Still playing for Derby.

Sebastien Pocognoli - Finally left Albion in the summer, and returned to Standard Liege.

Cristian Gamboa - Was sold late in the summer window before last for a nominal fee to Celtic.

Jason Davidson - Was sold to Huddersfield after one season, and they loaned him out to Dutch side FC Groningen.

Now plays for Rijeka in Croatia.

Georgios Samaras - Came in on a free from Celtic. Left initially on loan to Al-Hilal, and is now playing for Samsunspor.

Silvestre Varela - His season-long loan from Porto was cut short in January, and spent the rest of the season at Parma, who went into liquidation. Now in Turkey with Kayserispor.

Sebastian Blanco - Was loaned to San Lorenzo the January after signing, who bought him the following summer. Now in the MLS, with Portland Timbers and Liam Ridgewell.

Brown Ideye - The then record signing scored seven goals for Albion.

Left for Olympiakos in Greece, but departed in the recent window for the Chinese Super League and Tianjin Teda.

Andre Wisdom - A regular under Irvine at right-back on loan from Liverpool, but was displaced by Craig Dawson.

Made a permanent move to Derby in the summer.
